Stars' roster and salary costs

Here's a look at the Stars' salary situation based on the likely roster players. Right now it stands at just under $40.7 million for 20 players.

The Stars still have restricted free agents James Neal, Nicklas Grossman and Matt Niskanen left to sign, and it's believed the budget for salary is somewhere around $45 million.

The figures below are salary figures, not cap costs. The salary costs of several players are lower than their cap costs because the Stars structured contracts to pay out less in the first years of the deal to help the team with its current budget issues. For example, Steve Ott's salary this season is $2.1 million, but his cap cost is $2.95 million because that's the average cost of his contract over the four-year term.

Goalie Andrew Raycroft, who will compete with Brent Krahn for the backup goaltender's job, was used as the No. 2 goalie for this roster/salary breakdown.

Stars' roster and the salary cap

Here's the same roster based on the cap cost of each player. And when it comes to cap costs, the $1.9375 million the Stars are paying Sean Avery is still on the books. As for cap costs, the Stars have 20 likely roster players under contract for a total of just under $45.3 million.

The upper limit of the salary cap this season is $59.4 million and the cap floor is $43.4 million. If the Stars spend to their salary budget of somewhere around $45 million, then chances are they will be around $50 million to $51 million in cap costs, which will put them close to the midway point behind the upper limit and the floor.
