Stars end preseason with OT loss

The Dallas Stars lost 4-3 in overtime Saturday night in St. Louis to end the preseason with a 3-2-1 record. Former Star B.J. Crombeen’s goal 2:20 into the extra period was the game-winner for St. Louis.

Matt Niskanen had one goal and two assists and Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who also got a goal from Severin Blindenbacher. All three Dallas goals came on the power play.

Kari Lehtonen played the first two periods and stopped all 19 shots he faced and ended up stopping 75 of 77 shots he faced in three preseason appearances. The Stars said there was no injury issue with Lehtonen, but they wanted to give backup Andrew Raycroft some playing time and he ended up stopping eight of 12 shots in 21:05 of playing time.

The Stars struck for a pair of power play goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. The first one came on a five-on-three advantage. Blindenbacher scored off a wrist shot from the point with Adam Burish in front of the net at the 7:11 mark. At the 10:08 mark Benn scored off a backhand shot with the Stars on a five-on-four power play to make it a 2-0 game.

The Stars were able to maintain that 2-0 lead in the second period despite being outshot 12-1, but the Blues rallied in the third.

They struck early in the third to make it a 2-1 game. David Perron scored off a rebound on a St. Louis power play at the 1:38 mark. At the 4:47 mark Brad Boyes beat Raycroft with a wrist shot and the game was tied 2-2.

Niskanen tied the game with a power play goal at 9:06 of the third period. But St. Louis bounced back to tie again when T.J. Oshie beat Raycroft at the 13:42 mark.
