About the Stars

The Stars opened the season with a 4-3 overtime win at New Jersey Friday night, overcoming 2-0 and 3-2 deficits. Loui Eriksson, who scored twice in the game, notched the game-winner at 1:36 of overtime.

“It was huge for us that we stuck with how we were playing in that we battled and we played with intensity,” said Stars coach Marc Crawford. “I give our leaders credit. They were very committed to do the things they had to do. I thought there were periods where we dominated. It was an overall team win.”

Brenden Morrow and Brad Richards also scored goals and James Neal had two assists for the Stars, who got a 27-save effort from goaltender Kari Lehtonen.

Lehtonen will start in goal again Saturday.

Injuries: No major injuries.

About the Islanders

Saturday’s game will be the season opener for the Islanders, who have been hit hard by injuries already. Two of the team’s top players - defenseman Mark Streit and forward Kyle Okposo – were both injured in training camp and will be out for a while. Streit is expected to miss six months and Okposo is expected to be out 2-3 months.

John Tavares, the 1st overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, led the Islanders in scoring last season with 54 points (24 goals, 30 assists).

Goaltender Rick DiPietro, who has battled injuries the past three seasons, is said to be healthy again and has looked good in the preseason, posting a 2.40 goals against average and a .902 save percentage in 100 minutes of action.

Injuries: D Mark Streit (shoulder), F Kyle Okposo (shoulder), C Rob Schremp (back) are out.
