The significance of tonight's Stars-Ducks game

Today's Dallas Stars-Anaheim Ducks game has the potential to be a significant one, not just for the Stars and Ducks but for other teams in the playoff race as well.

The Stars obviously need a win to give them a shot of life in the playoff race, but if the the Ducks were to win here's what it would mean to them and other teams in the race.

Anaheim: If the Ducks beat the Stars in regulation they would clinch a playoff spot. Although the Stars would still be able to tie the Ducks in points at 95, the Stars could not catch the Ducks in the first tiebreaker (regulation and overtime wins).

Los Angeles: If the Ducks win in regulation, the Kings would clinch a playoff spot. They are at 96 points, so the Stars would not be able to catch them in points since the most Dallas could get is 95.

Phoenix: If the Ducks win in regulation, overtime or a shootout, the Coyotes would clinch a playoff spot. If the Stars fail to register a point then they could not catch the Coyotes, who have 96 points. If the Stars do pick up a point in an overtime or shootout loss, the Stars could still tie the Coyotes in points and the first tiebreaker (regulation and overtime wins), but would lose the second tiebreaker, which is the season series.

A Dallas win and things can stay a little more interesting.
