Rangers sign infielder Iribarren

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers have signed utility infielder Hernan Iribarren, who played in 12 games in each of the past two seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers. Iribarren has 27 career at-bats in the major leagues with five hits and two RBIs.

Iribarren was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Thursday because he had no options remaining. He hit .311 with 19 doubles, 54 RBIs and 13 stolen bases last season for Triple-A Nashville.

Update: The Rangers put RHP Eric Hurley on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Iribarren on the 40-man roster.

Iribarren's career major league games include playing at second base, left field and center field. He has not played shortstop in the majors. This could be simply a move to get more depth at the position and the Rangers could try to get Iribarren through waivers and designated to Oklahoma City to play second base should, for example, Esteban German become the utility infielder. That's all speculation, but it gives them some more options for now.
