Scheppers works on slider today

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers pitcher Tanner Scheppers sure did draw a crowd at the minor league game this afternoon on the back fields of Surprise Complex. Check out video of Scheppers from Ted Price over at Rangers Podcast in Arlington.

Scheppers pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. I talked to a few scouts and they were impressed in general with Scheppers (and all of them had seen him before already). He was 94 to 96 mph on his four-seamer and hit 97 mph twice, according to one gun.

Scheppers worked on his curve and slider in the first inning and then threw mainly fastballs in the second. He came inside on a few right-handed batters with his two-seamer.

"I threw just one changeup and it was for a ball," Scheppers said. "That's something I want to throw more coming up. I worked a lot on my slider and it was pretty good. I can get better in some areas and I'll keep working."
