Arias comes off DL, will back up Smoak

The Texas Rangers activated infielder Joaquin Arias from the 15-day disabled list Sunday and optioned right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Arias went on the DL on April 30 with a lower back strain. He was hitting .321 and made 13 starts at second base while Ian Kinsler was on the DL.

Now that Kinsler is healthy, Arias' opportunity to play will be limited. He'll add backup first baseman to his duties, however. Ryan Garko was optioned to Oklahoma City on Friday, leaving Justin Smoak as the only first baseman on the major league roster.

Arias hasn't played first before, but that's where he started during his four-game rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco.

Strop had been recalled from Oklahoma City before Saturday's game as an emergency option for a bullpen that had worked 10 1/3 innings the previous two games. But he wasn't needed, as starter Scott Feldman worked 7 1/3 innings and reliever Darren O'Day got the other two outs in a 6-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
