A throwing error by Alexi Ogando in the 11th inning proved costly for the Rangers in a 3-2 loss in Boston, Texas' first loss after the All-Star break.
Ogando started the frame by walking Marco Scutaro. The Rangers reliever then decided to get the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt by Darnell McDonald but ended up hitting Scutaro, and the ball scurried away with Scutaro advancing.
After an intentional walk to David Ortiz to load the bases, Kevin Youkilis hit a walk-off sacrifice fly off Darren O'Day for the final blow.
The Rangers squandered several opportunities and a brilliant nine-inning performance by Cliff Lee, who had retired 23 of last 24 Red Sox batters heading into ninth. It was Youkilis, however, who sent the game into extra innings with an RBI double off Lee that drove in Marco Scutaro.
The Rangers finished the game 0-for-16 at the bat and made questionable baserunning decisions early on that may have given Lee more support.
Boston starter John Lackey put on a stellar pitching performance of his own, going seven innings and striking out three while allowing two runs.
