ARLINGTON, Texas -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka recorded career strikeout No. 500 when he got Rangers second baseman Andres Blanco to whiff at strike three. However, it was Blanco's at-bat in the bottom of the second that has Matsuzaka trailing, 1-0.
Blanco's deep fly to center allowed Jorge Cantu to to tag from third and score the only run of the game through five innings.
Matsuzaka is battling Rangers lefty C.J. Wilson, who has faced just 18 batters through five innings, allowing no runs and three hits. He hasn't faced more than four batters in an inning. Matsuzaka has faced 19 batters through five, giving up four hits and the lone run. He's faced three batters in each of the last three innings, needing double plays in the first two to get it done.
