ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Yankees are trying to become just the fifth team in ALCS history to come back from a 3-1 deficit. It's clearly not an easy task, even with their win in Game 5.
This is the 18th time since the best-of-7 format began in 1985 that a team has had a 3-1 lead in the ALCS. Of the previous 17 that held that lead, 13 went to the World Series. Eight of those 13 ended the series in Game 5, which the Rangers obviously didn't do this season.
Four of them won in Game 6 and one won it in Game 7.
There have been four teams that didn't win the ALCS after having a 3-1 lead: 1985 Blue Jays (vs. Kansas City), 1986 Angels (vs. Boston), 2004 Yankees (vs. Boston) and the 2007 Indians (vs. Boston).
ESPN Stats & Information looked at the recent series of teams that were down 3-1 and won Game 5 since 2007. Take a look:
2009 Phillies in World Series: Lost in 6
2009 Angels in ALCS: Lost in 6
2008 Red Sox in ALCS: Lost in 7
2007 Red Sox in ALCS: Won in 7
Just passing it along.
