Notes: Michael Young to miss two days

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers designated hitter and super-utility infielder Michael Young will miss workouts Thursday and Friday as he deals with some family matters. He is expected to return to camp on Saturday.

Young was out on the field early on Wednesday working at first base and he's participating in the workouts going on right now at Surprise Recreation Campus.

Other notes:

* 3B Adrian Beltre ran on a treadmill on Wednesday as he and the club continue to monitor the mild calf strain. He isn't running on the field, but is taking ground balls and hitting. Manager Ron Washington isn't sure if Beltre will play in the exhibition opener on Sunday, but isn't concerned if he doesn't.

* Washington said he's looking forward to the intrasquad games, which start Thursday. "It changes things up a little bit," Washington said. "It gets the juices flowing, gives hitters a chance to see where they are and pitchers a chance to see where they are and we can watch guys on defense."

* Washington said he was impressed with Mark Lowe's changeups and sliders on Tuesday and added that Pedro Strop's splitter was "unhitable." How well Lowe does in spring could be critical in the club's decision about whether to move Neftali Feliz to the starting rotation.
