SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Tanner Scheppers, the Rangers' top-ranked right-handed pitching prospect, was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday morning.
Back pain prevented Scheppers from making any appearances in Cactus League games this spring.
"He didn't get a chance to leave an impression," manager Ron Washington said.
Scheppers, 24, the 44th overall pick in the 2009 draft, spent some of last season as a closer in Double-A and Triple-A. However, he'll begin this season in Round Rock's starting rotation.
"The guy hasn't had a whole lot of time in baseball, so I'm not locking into anything," Washington said. "He'll start this year as a starter and we'll see how it goes."
