ARLINGTON, Texas -- Michael Young sent a text message offering his congratulations to the Yankees’ Derek Jeter for reaching the 3,000-hit plateau on Saturday.
“It’s an incredible accomplishment, especially the way he did it, going 5-for-5 and winning the game,’’ said Young. “I’m happy for him and his family.’’
Young said he saw Jeter’s first two hits, including the third-inning home run off Tampa Bay’s David Price to reach the milestone.
“You could tell by the way he was fouling off the breaking ball and taking tough pitches he was putting together a great at-bat against one of the best pitchers in the league,’’ Young said. “To go deep and send 45-50,000 people into a frenzy is pretty cool.’’
Young said he has gotten to know Jeter and his family over the years as All-Star Game teammates.
Added Young: “I hope he takes the time to enjoy it.’’
