Andres Blanco aims for medical clearance

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rangers infield utility man Andres Blanco, currently on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his lower back, took some batting practice Sunday.

“I could feel it some, but I didn’t have a setback,’’ said Blanco, who was icing his back Monday.

He’s missed 15 games since suffering his injury on July 7. He was eligible to come off the disabled list on July 22.

“I feel like I’m on schedule, but I’ve got to get clearance from the trainer and everybody,’’ Blanco said.

* The Texas Rangers, in partnership with the City of Arlington Police and Fire Departments, will announce the details of a new "don’t text and drive" campaign today at Rangers Ballpark.

Pitcher Derek Holland, who is leading the initiative for the new campaign, will join city of Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman and Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management Don Crowson in discussing details of "Keep Your Thumbs on the Wheel."

The campaign will include a public service announcement, which will be unveiled Tuesday, as well as a poster initiative in Arlington public schools.
