DETROIT -- The Rangers face the Detroit Tigers in a three-game set starting tonight with RHP Colby Lewis on the mound against RHP Max Scherzer. A quick look at the matchup (starts at 6:05 p.m. Dallas time on FSSW/ESPN 103.3 FM) between two teams on top of their respective divisions:
Lewis (10-8, 4.00 ERA): The 31-year-old right-hander will make his 22nd start of the season coming off a 7-2 loss to Minnesota last week. ...Lewis gave up four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched with two walks and five strikeouts. ...Lewis has pitched at least six innings in eight straight starts and in 17 of his 21 starts this season. ...He has allowed 26 homers this season, tied for second-most in the majors behind Bronson Arroyo. ...Lewis is 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 10 road starts in 2011. ...He's 2-2 with a 7.23 ERA in five careers games against Detroit, including allowed nine runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings in a 13-7 loss to the Tigers in early June in Arlington.
Scherzer (11-6, 4.28 ERA): He turned 27 last week and comes into this series off a quality start, but a loss in Chicago against the White Sox. Scherzer gave up two runs on six hits in six innings with four walks and eight strikeouts (one shy of his season high). ...Scherzer has four consecutive quality starts and is 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA in that span with 20 strikeouts and five walks. ...He is 3-0 with a 3.48 ERA in five career starts versus Texas. That includes two starts in 2011. Scherzer is 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA, most of which came from a June 6 start in which he allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.
