Arthur Rhodes to become a free agent

The Rangers placed left-handed relief pitcher Arthur Rhodes on release waivers Monday. He becomes a free agent on Wednesday and will be eligible to sign with another club.

Rhodes, 41, went 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA in 32 relief appearances for Texas this season. He was designated for assignment on Tuesday when right-handed pitcher Mike Adams, acquired from San Diego in a deadline trade, was added to the 25-man roster.

Rhodes ranks second among active pitchers with 881 career appearances, trailing only the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera (1023) in that category. This is the 20th season in which Rhodes has appeared in a game. He joins just three other players who are active in 2011 and made their major league debut in 1991 or earlier: Omar Vizquel (1989), Ivan Rodriguez (1991), and Jim Thome (1991).
