ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Derek Holland knows his mustache isn't exactly an award winner or one that might challenge, say, the one sported by pitching coach Mike Maddux. But it's not going anywhere.
Holland made a deal with ESPN 103.3 FM's Ben & Skin (9 a.m. to noon every weekday) that he'd keep it until the Cowboys lose a game. Now, he's thinking of not shaving it off even after that. Why would he? He just beat the Angels going 8 2/3 innings on Tuesday.
"I think a couple of the other guys are not going to shave as well," Holland said.
But chances are all of them will have a mustache that looks better than Holland's.
"It's the worst mustache in baseball," Holland concedes. "I could maybe try Rogaine. But I doubt that's going to work. I can't really do anything to it. I just have to let it go. It's fun. It's all in good fun. And it's gross at the same time."
Give Holland some credit: He's able to poke fun at himself and isn't afraid to let his personality show. He's having fun and it's showing on the mound, too. We'll see how long he lasts with that mustache, which has garnered plenty of chuckles from his teammates.
