The Rangers are expected to call up Cuban outfielder Leonys Martin from Triple-A Round Rock with Nelson Cruz likely headed to the disabled list Tuesday.
General manager Jon Daniels said Monday that he sees this as an opportunity to see what the 23-year-old Martin can do for the Rangers.
"We feel Leonys has the ability to fill a role, but let's see how it plays out," Daniels said. "He's talented, though not a finished product, and the time up here can only help."
Martin has hit .263 with no homers and 17 RBIs in 40 games (175 at-bats) for Round Rock. He has hit a combined .295 with 19 stolen bases (and has been caught 11 times) in Arizona, Frisco and Round Rock this season. He signed a five-year deal worth $15.5 million with a $5 million signing bonus in May.
