2011 timeline: End of spring training

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- We continue our 2011 timeline with the month of March. It was a big one in terms of preparation for the season and a variety of events off the field, not to mention Tommy Hunter's groin injury. Here's a look:

Timeline: End of spring training (March)

Off-field signing: March 4 – The Rangers extend GM Jon Daniels’ contract through 2015.

Front office change: March 12 – Nolan Ryan replaces Chuck Greenberg as CEO of the Rangers. Ryan flies to Arlington from Surprise, Ariz., for the announcement.

Tough injury: March 24 -- Tommy Hunter injures his groin in his final spring start, throwing the Rangers rotation into a state of flux.

New starter: March 27 – The club decides to stretch out Alexi Ogando with the purpose of making him an option for the rotation spot left vacant by Hunter. Ogando ends up in the rotation and stays there the whole season.

Other March moments:

March 2: Napoli, considered the third catcher at this point, gets his first Cactus League start against his former team, the Angels.

March 3: Neftali Feliz made his first start of the spring, pitching a long (26 pitches), but scoreless first inning and then getting a timely double play in the second against the Indians.

March 7: Feliz tells reporters that he’d prefer to remain the closer, saying he’s more comfortable in that role than trying to start.

March 9: Derek Holland pitches well in a spring start, sending strong signals that he’s ready to seize one of the rotation spots.

March 14: Beltre returns to the Rangers lineup after dealing with a calf strain. He was 1-for-3. …Feliz changes his mind and says he does want to start after all. He says he’ll do whatever the club needs.

March 15: Chris Davis says he wants to play in the big leagues. If that’s not in Texas, he said he wants to be traded.

March 18: Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux hints that four of the rotation spots are locked up: C.J. Wilson, Matt Harrison and Tommy Hunter. That leaves the No. 5 spot up for grabs at this point of the spring.

March 20: Holland makes a strong start, giving him a possible edge in the race for the final rotation spot.

March 23: The club moves Alexi Ogando to the bullpen, telling him he won’t make their rotation to start the season. …Brandon Webb couldn’t get loose for a throwing session and will see a doctor for further evaluation.

March 24: Neftali Feliz is told he’ll be in the bullpen in 2011 that morning at spring training. …Jon Daniels reveals that he and Michael Young have had a few discussions to try to clear the air. Both describe the talks are productive.

March 25: Ogando’s name comes up as one the club is considering to fill Hunter’s spot, once the club finds out that Hunter is supposed to be out for about six weeks. Michael Kirkman and Dave Bush are two other possibilities. …Washington removes Julio Borbon from the game, calling it a “teachable moment.” Borbon was late getting to the on-deck circle early in the game and appeared to lack focus.

March 26: C.J. Wilson comes out of his start with left hamstring tightness. …Dave Bush makes the club as the long reliever.

March 27: The club decides to stretch out Alexi Ogando with the purpose of making him an option for the rotation spot left vacant by Hunter.

March 28: Texas trades catcher Matt Treanor to Kansas City for cash so they can use the extra roster spot to carry an additional reliever.
