Free agent first baseman and outfielder Brad Hawpe could make a decision about where he's playing in 2012 as soon as a week, said Dan Horwits, Hawpe's agent.
Horwits confirmed that Hawpe has narrowed his list of prospective teams to three and that it includes the Rangers. He declined to name the other two teams.
"He could make a decision soon, in the next week maybe," Horwits said.
Hawpe, 32, is a Fort Worth native. He batted just .231 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 62 games in 2011 with San Diego and hit. 245 with Colorado and Tampa Bay in 2010. Hawpe had elbow surgery last year, missing the rest of season.
"No matter where he signs, he wants to prove he's healthy and bounce back after the last two seasons," Horwits said.
Should Hawpe sign with the Rangers (and coming off the injury, he could end up with a minor league deal and an invitation to spring training), he would give them some insurance at first base with Mitch Moreland coming off wrist surgery and likely to be behind when spring training starts. The club expects him to be ready for Opening Day.
