FORT WORTH, Texas -- Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux indicated Monday night that Yu Darvish isn't likely to throw his entire seven-pitch assortment to big league hitters in 2012.
"Over there, there’s 12 teams," said Maddux, who signed autographs as part of the Rangers' Winter Caravan at Academy Sports and Outdoors in Fort Worth. "So they do play the same guys a lot. If that means having seven or eight pitches, there might be a time and a place to use all of them. The teams that we’ll play a lot, we play them 19 times. We might break a little something extra out there. But if we do four things, maybe five things really well, that should be enough."
Maddux said Darvish is on his own offseason program as he prepares for spring training, but added that Darvish will be ready to throw off a mound the first day in Surprise. Maddux added he thought Darvish did well at his introductory news conference on Friday.
"Just going on body language alone, it was impressive," Maddux said. "It wasn’t his first rodeo, I’ll say that."
