Surprise Six: Nolan Ryan speaks

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers CEO and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan spoke with the media today in an afternoon news conference, which covered various issues from Yu Darvish to Josh Hamilton to the club as a whole. But that wasn't all that happened today. Here's a look back at six things from Wednesday in Surprise:

1. Obviously, Darvish was the No. 1 topic at Ryan's news conference and he said the pitcher is more polished at age 25 than Ryan was at that age. The CEO also said he's excited about seeing the Japanese sensation in action.

2. Ryan said he supports Josh Hamilton and the club will do whatever it can to help the slugger. He reiterated that contract talks are on hold, but said Hamilton is focused on preparing for 2012.

3. Ryan said that the Rangers are a better club now than they were at this time last year and he credits a young pitching staff and a hard-working core group of position players for that.

4. Closer Joe Nathan says he feels as good as he has in years heading into spring training and can't wait to get going.

5. Mitch Moreland says he's not far behind at all from the rest of the hitters. He's taking 75 swings per day, fewer than anyone else, but it's more of a precautionary measure. He was pleased with how he's progressing.

6. Justin Miller, who arrived at spring training to find his locker beside Darvish, was a media hit on Wednesday morning. Here's our conversation with him.
