Pitching coach Mike Maddux said the plan is for Darvish to throw two bullpen sessions between starts. And that means back-to-back days after he takes Monday off. Last week, Darvish also threw consecutive bullpen sessions with one a little longer (36 pitches) than the other (20 pitches or so).
Maddux said it's the same program Colby Lewis has been on for the past two seasons after he returned from a two-season stint in Japan. Lewis, like Darvish, was pitching every six days in Japan, but has made the adjustment without any trouble. Lewis has pitched at least 200 innings both seasons in a Rangers uniform.
Darvish isn't worried about the transition.
"I'm not concerned about that," Darvish said through translator Joe Furukawa. "It's more about polishing my delivery and repetition. That's what I'm focusing on."
