ARLINGTON, Texas -- The finale of this four-game series between Texas and Seattle is Thursday as both teams prepare to leave town. The Rangers go to Minnesota and Seattle heads home to host Oakland in its home opener.
First the finale.
Derek Holland (0-0, 4.50 ERA): In his first start of the season, the left-hander went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Holland was disappointed in the number of walks he allowed and said he wants to solve those problems. He left the game with the score tied, 3-3, but closer Joe Nathan failed to maintain the tie and the Rangers lost the game. Holland made three of four starts against Seattle at Rangers Ballpark last season and had a 2-0 record with a 4.24 ERA.
Jason Vargas (1-0, 2.31 ERA): The 29-year old left-hander will make his third start of the season. He had a no decision in Tokyo against Oakland while going 6 1/3 innings. His last start, April 6, was a victory against Oakland. Vargas went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out three. Vargas set career-highs last season in strikeouts, wins, innings and starts. He was tied for third in the AL with three shutouts and tied for fourth in complete games with four.
