Pregame buzz: Tanner Scheppers arrives

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Tanner Scheppers has finally reached the majors.

When the Texas Rangers made the right-hander the 44th overall pick of the 2009 draft, Scheppers was thought to be on the fast track to the big leagues. It took three years, but he got the long-awaited call Wednesday afternoon. He was added to the Rangers roster Thursday after Derek Holland landed on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue.

"It's definitely a dream come true," Scheppers said. "I'm glad the Rangers are giving me an opportunity. I want to go out and help the team any way I can."

Scheppers, 25, has pitched parts of three seasons at Triple A. Working out of the Round Rock bullpen, he had a 3.72 ERA in 25 games with nine saves.

"I've had some rough outings and some good outings," Scheppers said. "I just have to keep an even head and keep it going."

The Rangers will mix Scheppers somewhere into middle relief. Manager Ron Washington said he is hoping to be able to use Scheppers for up to two innings.

"We'll have to see when he gets on the mound what he does," Washington said. "If he gets through a first inning and there's a second available and he can give it to us, we'll give it to him, but we'll have to see. We don't know. We know he can throw the ball. We have to see how he reacts when he takes the ball his first big league game."

* Yu Darvish's stats changed twice in the four days since he pitched. He was initially charged with allowing only two earned runs Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels because a ball mishandled by first baseman Mike Napoli was ruled a two-base error. The official scorer later changed his call and ruled it a double for Albert Pujols, adding an earned run to Darvish's line. On Thursday, the Rangers announced that the league office had reversed the call again, making it a single and an error, and the run is again unearned.

* Wednesday's night game took just 2 hours, four minutes, making it the fastest game in the American League this season. The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies played a game in 2:02 on May 3.

* Rangers pitchers have had three quality starts that they've lost on the first six games of this trip. They had only two all season prior to this trip.
