Yu Darvish wins vote, makes All-Star team

Yu Darvish is an All-Star in his first major league season.

The 25-year-old Texas Rangers pitcher from Japan earned the final spot on the American League squad thanks to the fans, who voted him in over four other players as part of the 2012 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Firestone.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese was picked to represent the National League in the online voting.

Darvish becomes the eighth Rangers player to make the All-Star roster this season, a club record. He beat out Jake Peavy of the Chicago White Sox, along with Baltimore’s Jason Hammel, Kansas City’s Jonathan Broxton and the Angels’ Ernesto Frieri.

Darvish leads all rookies with 10 wins and has a 3.59 ERA in 16 starts. He has 117 strikeouts, third-most in the AL. He’s also third in walks with 53.
