ESPN Stats & Information (a crew that included Justin Havens, Deontay Morris, Jacob Nitzberg, Katie Sharp, Lee Singer and Nate Jones) put together a quick look at how Yu Darvish pitched so well against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Darvish gave up two runs on two hits in eight innings with eight strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. Here's what he did:
* Darvish threw 40 cutters among his 96 pitches, nine more cutters than in any other start this season. He recorded a season-high nine outs on the pitch without allowing a hit.
* Darvish put hitters away with his other fastballs (2/4-seam). He threw 60 percent fastballs with two strikes, his highest percentage this season. Rays hitters were 0-for-6 with six strikeouts against Darvish's two-strike fastballs.
* Darvish would retire all 16 hitters he started with a 0-1 count. Seven of his eight strikeouts came after he started the hitter with a first-pitch strike. Darvish has a sparkling 140-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season after he starts the hitter with a first-pitch strike.
