A.J. Pierzynski deal is now official

The Texas Rangers made their one-year deal with catcher A.J. Pierzynski official on Wednesday, after he passed a physical last week. Sources said it’s worth $7.5 million.

The Rangers designated catcher Luis Martinez to make room for Pierzynski on the 40-man roster.

Pierzynski fills a hole at catcher and joins Geovany Soto as the two primary backstops for the 2013 season in Texas.

Pierzynski turns 36 on Dec. 30 and hit .278 with 27 homers and 77 RBIs in 2012 for the Chicago White Sox. He played in 135 games. The homers were a career-high and the RBIs tied a career-high set back in 2004.
