SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Two pitchers will return for the Rangers today and resume their efforts to claim one of the six open bullpen positions behind closer Joe Nathan.
RHP Tanner Scheppers is scheduled to pitch an inning in today's 'B' game after missing nearly two weeks with a tight right hamstring. The 26-year old made his major league debut last season as a June call-up, appearing in 39 games for the Rangers as a reliever. Scheppers threw 32 1/3 innings, allowing 47 hits with a 4.45 ERA but struck out 30.
"I want to go out there and pound the strike zone and get ahead of hitters," said Scheppers, who can hit 96 mph regularly on the gun.
Scheppers has appeared in just one spring game this season, allowing one run in one inning. He is in his first spring as a member of the 40-man roster after being a non-roster invitee for his three previous camps.
Yoshinori Tateyama, who returns after missing almost a week with lower back stiffness, is also scheduled to pitch a game in today's 'B' game.
Tateyama has appeared in 53 games with Texas the last two seasons and has a 5.75 career ERA. He has pitched well against righties, who are hitting only .200 against him with a .234 on-base percentage. The 37-year old hasn't enjoyed the same success against lefties, as they have hit .272 with a .353 OBP.
"Throwing inside to lefties is something he was working on before going down with back issues," manager Ron Washington said. "He doesn't hurt himself and throws the ball over the plate. He's not out there walking people. He's not getting deep in counts, and that's what you like to see."
