Fun with numbers: Strikeouts piling up

After taking two of three games against the Houston Astros, let's dive into some mind-boggling numbers, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Info and Elias, that were put up by the Texas Rangers pitching staff:

  • The Rangers staff has 43 strikeouts to start the season, the most strikeouts in the first three games of a season since 1900. The previous record was 42, held by the 1966 Cleveland Indians.

  • The Rangers are the first team since 1920 to allow no runs and strike out at least 15 hitters in consecutive games. The Astros are the first team since 1920 to score no runs and strike out at least 15 times in consecutive games.

  • Rangers franchise firsts: Two straight games with 15 strikeouts and three straight games with 13 or more Ks.

  • The Astros were shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since July 2-3, 2010.

  • Yu Darvish was the first Rangers pitcher with 14 strikeouts in a game since Nolan Ryan did it in 1991 against the Angels. In fact, the last seven times that a Rangers pitcher had 14+ strikeouts prior to Tuesday were by Ryan. He also was only the second Rangers pitcher with as many as 14 strikeouts and no walks in a game, joining Ryan, who struck out 15 without walking a batter over 10 innings against the Chicago White Sox in August 1990.

  • The Rangers had a strikeout in 25 of the 26 innings vs. Houston. Only in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game did they fail to record a strikeout. They had two grounders and a popup.
