Rapid Reaction 1: D-backs 5, Rangers 3

PHOENIX -- The Texas Rangers (32-19) opened a split doubleheader with a 5-3 loss to the National League West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks (29-22) on Monday at Chase Field.

What this means: Texas matched a season high with its second consecutive loss and dropped back-to-back games for the fifth time this season.

Perez debut: Martin Perez was designated the Rangers’ 26th man for today's split doubleheader and was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to make a spot start in Game 1. The left-hander struggled with his location and fell behind hitters often, lasting 5⅓ innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, along with two walks and two strikeouts. Perez was removed from his first major league start of the 2013 season after throwing 95 pitches, with runners on first and third. Ross Wolf came on in relief and faced just one batter, inducing A.J. Pollock into an inning-ending double play.

Power outage: The Texas offense had scored one run in 19 innings before breaking through in the ninth, when the Rangers struck for three runs on four hits and a walk against reliever Tony Sipp and closer Heath Bell.

Profar so far: Jurickson Profar moved back to the 2 slot in the batting order, with Elvis Andrus returning after getting Sunday off. Profar reached base three times in Monday’s first game, with a single, double and walk, and drove in a run to get the ninth-inning rally started. The second baseman did have an error with two outs in the second inning, enabling Paul Goldschmidt to bat and drive in the Diamondbacks' second run of the game. Profar is batting .304 in five games since being called up when Ian Kinsler went on the disabled list.

Joe's woes: LHP Joseph Ortiz continued his recent struggles out of the bullpen after allowing one run on two hits and a walk during his inning of work. Ortiz has now allowed six earned runs in his past seven innings pitches. During his past three appearances, opponents are batting .500 (8-for-16) with five walks.

Interleague lull: Texas is now 2-4 against the NL in 2013.

What's next? Texas will close out its two-game day against the D-backs at 8:40 p.m. CT at Chase Field. RHP Yu Darvish (7-2, 2.84 ERA) will start for Texas. RHP Trevor Cahill (3-2, 2.81) will start for Arizona. The game can be heard live on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM and 1540-AM. Texas is off Tuesday but will open a five-game homestand Wednesday against Arizona at 7:05 p.m. CT.
