Perez (3-1, 2.08 ERA): Perez makes his sixth start of the season … He has bolstered the Rangers' starting rotation, going 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on June 22 … The 22-year old picked up a career-best third straight victory with a 8-4 win over Baltimore on Tuesday night … He is one of five major league pitchers with three or more wins and an ERA of 1.44 or better since his recall … Perez has held off right-handed hitters with his changeup … The left-hander has allowed a .259 batting average to right-handed hitters but only five extra base hits … Perez has made one career relief appearance against the Tigers, allowing four runs in ⅔ innings.

Verlander (9-6, 3.71 ERA): Verlander is on the American League All-Star team for the sixth time, even though he hasn't been as dominant this season as in years past … Verlander was hit hard again on Wednesday, allowing five runs on a season-high 12 hits in an 11-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox … He also had a season-low three strikeouts, but still he's sixth in the AL with 122 K's … Verlander has allowed five runs or more in four starts, including his worst of the season against the Rangers in Arlington … He allowed eight earned runs and threw a season-low 70 pitches in a 10-4 loss to Texas on May 16 … That included a three-run home run by Geovany Soto … Verlander still has been very good against the Rangers, with a 7-3 record and a 2.92 ERA for his career.

Hitters: Adrian Beltre (11-for-36, 1 HR, 4 RBIs) has had success against Verlander. A.J. Pierzynski has three home runs and 12 RBIs off the right-hander in 74 at-bats. The current Tigers' roster is 3-for-3 against Perez.
