ARLINGTON--The Rangers and Mariners will wrap up their four-game set Thursday with RHP Tommy Hunter starting for Texas and LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith up for the Mariners. Here's a brief look at the matchup:
Hunter (1-0, 1.00 ERA): The 23-year old will be making only his second start of the season Thursday, after a fantastic first start of the year against Tampa Bay. Hunter pitched his second-career complete game, allowing only five hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander was 1-2 with a 2.59 ERA in four starts against the Mariners last year.
Rowland-Smith (0-4, 6.65 ERA): The 27-year-old has really struggled on the road (8.72 ERA in five starts), and has been terrible in May (six appearances, three of them starts, only 12 IP with 12.00 ERA). However, his last start was among his best work of the year. Rowland-Smith lasted five innings of a 11-2 Mariners loss to the Angels, but he allowed only four hits and one run.
Hitters: Ichiro Suzuki (6-13) has led Seattle against Hunter, while Franklin Gutierrez (2-13) and Jose Lopez (2-12) have struggled. Vlad Guerrero (5-10) and David Murphy (2-6) have had success against Rowland-Smith, while Josh Hamilton and Michael Young are both seeking their first hit from the lefty (both 0-5).
