Anthony "The Assassin" Njokuani, WEC lightweight standout and ESPNDallas.com MMA blogger, had a successful night in his last fight for World Extreme Cagefighting. The Zuffa-owned promotion will be incorporating all of its weight classes into the UFC this January.
Njokuani fought Hawaiian Edward Faaloloto at WEC 52 in Las Vegas. With improved takedown defense and his always-stellar Muay Thai skills, the Garland native was able to dispatch his opponent via TKO with just ten seconds left in the second round. In the fight-ending exchange, Njokuani was able to clinch with his opponent delivering a handful of knees and elbows. The flurry of strikes dropped Faaloloto to the canvas forcing the referee to call an end to the bout. Njokuani’s long-time Muay Thai instructor, Saekson Janjira, who is based in Plano, is surely proud of one of his most prized pupils.
With the win, Njokuani ended a two-fight losing streak and, more importantly, assured himself a place among the UFC's lightweight roster.
Njokuani, in his own blog, made it clear that his upcoming opportunity in the UFC is a culmination of everything he’s been working for in his seven-year mixed martial arts career. Njokuani got his start by fighting in local promotions such as Art of War and Supreme Warrior Championship.
"[MMA] is what I do for a living. This is the reason I pour my blood, sweat and tears into training day in and day out," Njokuani said. "I don't have a second job or anything else to fall back on because this is all I know and this is my dream. Entering the UFC's Octagon for the first time will truly be a heartfelt accomplishment for me. It will demonstrate to the world and to myself that my hard work and the hard work of the people that helped me along the way has paid off."
