FORT WORTH, Texas -- Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves came out together and decided to let the crowd decide which tire to turn over.
The crowd cheered loudest for one and when Kanaan turned it over, it showed No. 1. So Kanaan will start inside Row 1 and lead the field in the second of the Firestone Twin 275s.
"That's the easiest pole I've ever had," Kanaan said.
Kanaan has never started first at a race at TMS. He has started in the top-4 three times and won the spring race in 2004 and finished second two other times. After finishing 11th in the first race, Kanaan will get a chance to see how his car responds out front.
Castroneves, also playing up to the crowd, managed to get No. 6.
Kanaan said he told Castroneves that he should pick for Castroneves and vice versa. Castroneves said no, so Kanaan picked for himself and got the pole.
"It's our first pole for the team this year," Kanaan said, laughing.
