You would think that wouldn't be difficult. Mike Modano is still one of the top skaters on the ice when he jumps over the boards and he's a good faceoff guy that can certainly score goals. In short: He's certainly a top-3 center.
But Modano was playing on the fourth line in Detroit. Why? Well, the Stars like Tom Wandell's energy, so they wanted to move him up. You can't mess around with Brad Richards. Then what do you do with Mike Ribeiro? You see the problem. The Stars have so much depth at center (and forward total) that sometimes that can happen.
Coach Marc Crawford did move things around in practice and had Modano with James Neal and Jere Lehtinen. I'd like to see that line play in Thursday's game. But it is difficult with all of these forwards to find the proper place for everyone. And when you're a team looking to score more goals, sometimes finding the right combinations take time.
I like Modano with Neal and Lehtinen. It's worth a try to see how things go. Where would you put Modano? What would you do with other lines?
