Kings score late, edge Stars 1-0

The Dallas Stars saw their winning streak end at five games with a 1-0 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles Saturday night. The Stars are now 6-2-0 on the season, while the Kings improved to 5-1-1. Jack Johnson’s goal with 4:58 left in the third period was the lone tally of the game. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick stopped 28 shots for his third consecutive shutout. Andrew Raycroft, making his second start of the season, played well for the Stars, stopping 23 of 24 shots.

First period

The Stars and Kings played a fast paced first period. Both goaltenders – Andrew Raycroft for the Stars and Jonathan Quick for the Kings – were sharp. The Stars had a 10-9 shots advantage in the period and the Stars gave Raycroft some help, blocking 13 Los Angeles shots.

There were no power plays in the period, but Stars forward Steve Ott and Kings center Mike Richards picked up fighting majors after they dropped the gloves with 3:18 left in the period.

Second period

Andrew Raycroft came up with some big saves in the second period for the Stars, stopping Justin Williams on a two-on-one and then stopping Williams and Simon Gagne with the Kings on a power play.

Both teams had power play chances in the period and the Stars outshot the Kings 11-10 in the period, but it was still a scoreless game heading into the third.

Third period

The Stars had a good push that started about four minutes into the third and it included a Michael Ryder shot that hit the post, but they couldn’t a puck past Quick.

The Kings broke the scoreless tie with 4:58 remaining. After Mike Richards won an offensive zone draw, Rob Scuderi sent the puck to Jack Johnson, who scored off a shot from the right point.
