The Dallas Stars dropped their second straight game, falling 5-2 to the Red Wings in Detroit Saturday night. It’s the first time the Stars (11-5-0) have lost consecutive games this season. The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes, but the Red Wings (9-5-1) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to win their running streak to four games. The Stars, who finished their four-game road trip 2-2-0, got goals from Loui Eriksson and Brenden Morrow.
The Red Wings got an early power play, but the Stars were able to kill it off. Andrew Raycroft made four saves and Loui Eriksson came up with a big play to stop a quality chance for the Red Wings.
After blocking a shot by Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom, Eriksson drew a penalty on the Red Wings defenseman and the scored on the Dallas power play, scoring off the rebound of a Trevor Daley point shot to put the Stars up 1-0.
The Stars came close to making it a 2-0 game, but Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made a great save on a point blank chance by Jake Dowell.
The Red Wings tied the game late in the second. Just after a faceoff in the Dallas zone, Niklas Kronwall’s shot from the top of the left circle was tipped past Raycroft by Tomas Holmstrom.
The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead at 3:08 of the second when Ian White’s shot from the right point found its way through traffic and past Stars goalie Andrew Raycroft.
The Stars drew even at 12:11 with a goal off the rush. Mike Ribeiro backhanded the puck to Brenden Morrow, who beat Jimmy Howard shortside with a shot from the left circle.
Raycroft came up with a couple of nice saves on Henrik Zetterberg point blank chances late in the period to keep it a 2-2 game.
The Red Wings outshot the Stars 16-7 in the second and had a 31-18 advantage through the first 40 minutes.
The Red Wings took the lead at 3:47 of the third when Valtteri Filppula drove the net, backhanded the puck on net and Johan Franzen scored on the rebound.
The Stars came close to tying with just over 11 minutes remaining during a scramble in front of Howard, but Jamie Benn shot hit Detroit defenseman Ian White in the head and another Stars shot went just wide of the net.
A short time later the Red Wings made it a 4-2 game when Jiri Hudler set up Darren Helm on a two-on-one and Helm chipped the puck past Raycroft at the 9:19 mark.
Brad Stuart made it 5-2, scoring off a point shot at 10:32 following a Detroit offensive zone faceoff win.
Benn and Detroit's Jakub Kindl dropped the gloves late in the game, with Benn getting in most of the blows.
