New addition to Ward family

After Andre Ward easily outpointed Carl Froch in December to unify super middleweight titles and win the Super Six World Boxing Classic, Ward was planning a layoff.

The reason he hasn't fought since then isn't just because of the fractured hand he suffered in his final training session getting ready for Froch. Ward's wife, Tiffiney, was pregnant and Ward didn't want to begin training for a fight until after the baby was born. He wanted to be around his family during the important time and also give himself at least eight weeks to get ready for his next fight.

That's why Ward's next fight -- a very interesting defense against light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (who is coming down in weight) on HBO -- won't happen until Sept. 8, in Ward's hometown of Oakland, Calif.

Tiffiney gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday. Welcome Micah "Champ" Ward, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 10 ounces. Now Ward can enjoy his new son before beginning training camp with plenty of time to get ready for Dawson.

Ward reports that all is well with mother and son, who joins his three siblings, Andre Jr. (11), Malachi (9) and Amira Lecian (4).

"It is with great joy that we share the arrival of our son," the Wards said in a statement. "We thank God that we are all healthy. We are enjoying this moment with our family and are happy to share the good news with our boxing family too!"
