Alvarado sellout helps flood victims

DENVER -- A good fight is helping a good cause.

The junior welterweight bout between titleholder Mike Alvarado, a Denver native, and Russian challenger Ruslan Provodnikov, who meet Saturday night (HBO, 9:45 ET/PT) at the 1stBank Center in nearby Broomfield, Colo., sold out on Friday night, according to promoter Top Rank.

The sellout of 7,012 means a donation in that dollar amount will be made by Alvarado and Top Rank to the Salvation Army for its emergency disaster services serving Colorado. The money is meant to assist victims affected by last month’s severe flooding in the state.

Two weeks ago, Alvarado and Top Rank announced they would donate $1 per ticket sold to the charity.

"Colorado boxing fans have been so supportive of me throughout my entire career and I am only too happy to support the people of my state in their time of need. We all need to do our part,” Alvarado said.

"I have a home in Colorado. I love this state. Top Rank was on board the minute Mike brought it up to us,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “A great event to support a great cause.”
