One thing about Long Beach, N.Y., light heavyweight "Irish" Seanie Monaghan: When he fights, his fans turn out and he usually gives them their money's worth.
For the past few years, Monaghan has been a go-to ticket seller for promoters putting on cards in New York. He wasn't aligned with a specific promoter, so he freelanced on various shows, mostly fighting on Top Rank and Lou DiBella undercards.
Monaghan, who is typically in action-packed brawls, would get his base purse and also a healthy percentage of the tickets he sold, which could often be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Monaghan (18-0, 11 KOs), 31, sold his share of tickets for his most recent fight too, when he appeared on Top Rank's April 13 Guillermo Rigondeaux-Nonito Donaire undercard at Radio City Music Hall and knocked out Dion Stanley in the first round. Although the fight didn't last long, Monaghan's fans cheered as wildly as any set of fighter fans in the theater.
On Tuesday, Monaghan's days of freelancing came to an end as he signed with Top Rank.
"It's an honor to sign with Top Rank," he said. "I have really improved, and I know Top Rank will work hard to get me the big fights."
Said P.J. Kavanagh, Monaghan's manager: "Seanie wants to fight for the world title, and we think being with Top Rank will help us get there. The sky's the limit for Seanie."
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Monaghan's first fight under the new deal will be the opening televised fight on Oct. 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on the Timothy Bradley Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez HBO PPV card. His opponent is not set yet.
Arum is hoping that perhaps some of Monaghan's fans will travel, but more important, he hopes that they buy the pay-per-view and that Monaghan's presence on the card gets the show some attention in the New York media.
"He is a fan-friendly fighter who has a large and loyal fan base," Arum said.
