The Denver Broncos elected to play wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders in the team’s preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks last week after Sanders had missed some practice time leading up to the game.
The Broncos will not take that approach again Sunday as Sanders is expected to sit out the team's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. Broncos head coach John Fox said Friday afternoon the team was going "to be smart" with Sanders.
Sanders played 20 snaps against the Seahawks after he had missed some practice time with a thigh injury. Sanders did not have a catch in the game.
Sanders then missed practice time again this past week, including Friday’s main workout, and as a result the Broncos have elected to keep Sanders out of Sunday’s game.
Cornerback Kayvon Webster, who has worked plenty with the starting defense throughout training camp in a variety of situations, also will not play. Webster rolled his ankle in Saturday’s practice, just before the team left for its charter flight to San Jose, California.
The injury is not considered serious, but it will push rookie Bradley Roby into more playing time.
