Detroit Lions waive Montell Owens

The Detroit Lions sent fullback Montell Owens to injured reserve earlier this year and then, in an uncharacteristic move for the team, took away his locker as well.

At the time, Lions coach Jim Caldwell would only say Owens was placed on IR, ending his season on the injured list for the second straight year. On Tuesday, though, they cut Owens completely.

The team also cut linebacker Jerrell Harris from the practice squad, but made no additions to the roster.

Pro Football Talk reported earlier Tuesday that the team was planning on re-signing tight end Kellen Davis -- perhaps a sign that Joseph Fauria's ankle injury could be an issue -- but no moves were on the official transaction report.

These moves do leave the Lions with one open spot on their practice squad, though.
