Two pioneers of women's marathon running have been selected by the Boston Athletic Association to serve as grand marshals at next Monday's Boston Marathon.
Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb and Sara Mae Berman will ride in the pace car ahead of lead runners competing in the 117th edition of the race. Being out front is nothing new for Gibb, who in 1966 became the first woman to run and complete the Boston Marathon, six years before female participation was officially accepted.
Gibb also won the women's race in 1967 and 1968 before Berman took the top spot from 1969 through 1971.
