For a day, anyway, our beloved Wozilroy was back together. In the winner's circle, that is. Rory McIlroy celebrated a wire-to-wire victory at Royal Liverpool to win his first British Open and third major on Sunday, hours after Caroline Wozniacki beat Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 to win the Istanbul Cup, her first title of the year and the 22nd of her career.
The wins on the same day raised eyebrows around the sports world. Kismet, anyone?
So Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki win tournaments in their respective sports today. Of course the British Open is the big one:) — Martina Navratilova (@Martina) July 20, 2014
Rory McIlroy: He lost the dame and found his game. Caroline Wozniacki: Dumped by a chump, she became a champ. — Norman Chad (@NormanChad) July 20, 2014
The former sports power couple, which had been dating since 2011, called off their engagement in May just days after sending out their wedding invitations. The ceremony had been scheduled for November. After beating Kristina Mladenovic in the semifinals on Saturday, Wozniacki, who denied during Wimbledon that she would test the waters of Internet dating, admitted she was on Facetime because she was "#missingmyboy." It's not what (who) you think.
Earlier in the week, the 5-foot-10 Wozniacki seemed to take a shot at her 5-9 human former boy.
Wozniacki famously spent time mending her broken heart in Miami with Serena Williams following her breakup with McIlroy. And Williams, who later suffered a Wimbledon meltdown that she blamed on a "viral illness," wasn’t about to be left out of the weekend fun.
