We can't wait for our first game

Hi women’s basketball fans! This is Haley Peters, a junior forward for the Duke Blue Devils.

As the season officially got started this past weekend, we have yet to play a game. We are deep in the process of getting better every day, getting the freshmen acclimated to our system and standards and trying to build on the lessons we’ve learned and experience we’ve gained from last year and this summer.

We ended last year on a sour note, but our seniors Kathleen Scheer and Shay Selby left an indelible legacy of passion and leadership for us to carry on.

This summer, after we all returned to Durham from internships and time with family, we had the unique chance to practice together before a trip to Europe. We welcomed in our new teammates -- Alexis Jones, Katie Heckman and Sierra Moore -- and introduced them to the Duke women’s basketball way during 10 days in France and Italy.

The highlight of the trip, by far, was bringing Allison Vernerey, our lone senior, back to her home in Mulhouse and enjoying an authentic French meal with her sister, dad, family and friends. Raclette has become a staple of our team meals!

After our Blue-White scrimmage and two exhibition games, we’ve gotten in two strong weeks of practice. We’re looking forward to our first game Saturday against Presbyterian.

I hope all you Blue Devil fans will come out to Cameron Indoor Stadium to support us as we will have games on back-to-back days: Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. against Iona.

Go Duke!
