Today, on the first official day of summer, we have some extra time in the sun for fun and games. But speaking of games, the first modern Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens on April 6, 1896. It is believed that 14 nations were represented. By comparison, there were 204 at the 2012 Games in London. The most decorated star at the inaugural Games was a German named Carl Schuhmann, who won gold medals in gymnastics and wrestling and also competed in the long jump, triple jump, shot put and weightlifting. At the 1900 Olympics in Paris, women competed for the first time. The 2016 Summer Games will be held in South America for the first time starting on Aug. 5, 2016, -- just 1,141 days away! -- when Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro is the host.
