On this day in 1816, Argentina declared its independence from Spain, creating a home country for several sports legends, including soccer superstars Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, golfer Angel Cabrera and tennis player Juan Martin del Potro. At the 2012 London Olympics, Argentina’s powerhouse women’s field hockey team – led by captain and all-time great Luciana Aymar -- won the silver medal, beating Great Britain in the semifinal but falling to the Netherlands 2-0 in the gold-medal game. One of the biggest names in Argentina sports history is Gabriela Sabatini, who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. Known for her beauty off the court and a beautiful backhand on it, Sabatini won the U.S. Open in 1990 by upsetting Steffi Graf.
