After 260 years of holding firm to a “BOYS ONLY! NO GIRLS ALLOWED!” mantra, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews finally voted to allow female members on Thursday. Welcome to the 19th, maybe even the 20th, century, guys!
Voters approved the move by an “overwhelming majority,” and R&A secretary Peter Dawson called it a “very important and positive day” in a statement. Naturally, because women’s equality is a pretty accepted thing these days, the decision garnered widespread accolades and “FINALLY!” exclamations from around the golf world.
I am thrilled the R&A has voted overwhelmingly to allow female members. This is a great day for golf and a historic one for women in golf

It's rare to see a rule last for 260 years. Great to see R&A vote yes for female members #anotherstepforward
