Rangers acquire defenseman Brendan Smith from Wings

The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Brendan Smith from the Detroit Red Wings on the eve of the NHL's trade deadline, according to sources.

The deal is pending an official trade call, a source said Tuesday. In return, the Wings will get a second-round pick in 2018 and and a third-round selection in 2017, sources told ESPN.

Smith, 28, is a pending unrestricted free agent. Detroit had been in contract negotiations with Smith to keep him on board, but ultimately decided to move him instead.

Smith was fifth in ice time in Detroit at 18:44 minutes per game and has two goals and three assists in 33 games this season.

Information from ESPN's Craig Custance was used in this report.
